Change is always afoot, but sometimes it comes when we don’t expect it. Whether it’s an unexpected transformation in our own life, a change at work, or a general societal transformation, the unexpected can be overwhelming. But even during uncertainty, there are ways to ride it out with peace and poise.

1. Accept the Change

The first thing to do when you’re trying to navigate change is to accept that it has occurred. Many times, we fight for what we can’t control, but fighting the change can cause frustration. Rather than fighting the change, attempt to accept that it’s on your path. Keep in mind that change, though difficult, is also a reflection of growth, a chance to reinvent yourself and open yourself up to new possibilities.

2. Take a Step Back

When everything seems like it’s up in the air, stepping back to catch your breath is necessary. Stepping back does not mean stepping out of the game, it’s a matter of clearing space for your brain to deal with your feelings. Whether by taking a couple of deep breaths, walking outside, or getting out of the situation temporarily, taking that mental time-out for yourself allows you to approach the situation fresh again.

3. Control What You Can

When confronted with surprise change, it’s easy to feel like everything is unraveling at the seams. But there’s always something you can control. Focus on small, manageable steps. If it’s a change at work, perhaps you can adapt by learning new tools or setting better time management habits. If it’s a personal change, figure out a way to cope with your well-being. By focusing on the little things that you can manage, you again have a feeling of control amidst uncertainty.

4. Stay Connected

When faced with change, it is crucial to rely on the support of others. Talk to friends, family, or coworkers who know your situation. They can provide comfort, guidance, or just a sympathetic ear. Sometimes, sharing your thoughts and concerns with others can provide new insights or remind you that you’re not the only one going through what you’re going through.

5. Take the Opportunity for Growth

Loss will always precede change, yet it’s a time of building as well. Perhaps now is the opportunity to learn a new skill, start a hobby, or perhaps redefine your attitude. Embrace the unknown as the possibility for discovery and maturation. Change might be painful, but exciting when we hold ourselves open-heartedly and openly.

6. Be Patient with Yourself

Change is a process. Don’t expect that you will know everything tomorrow. It’s okay to be confused or unclear as you adjust to the new reality. Be kind to yourself in the process and be kind to yourself as you navigate the transition.

Change of this kind can be unsettling, but it does not have to be feared. Welcoming the transition, proceeding at your own speed, staying active with others, and leaving yourself open to learning, you can turn this adversity into an asset. Keep in mind, that change isn’t just about where you are headed, it’s about the journey and the strength you build along the way. Stay calm, trust the process, and know that you are able to weather whatever comes in front of you.–
